Cultivating Understanding: Team Highlights Mental Health at Cultural Diversity Event

2024-03-22

The Mental Health Project Team at the Division of Public Policy at HKUST has participated at the Cultural Bazaar on March 22, 2024. Organized by the Diversity and Equal Opportunities Division in observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the event provided a platform to emphasize the importance of cultural diversity in mental health among ethnically diverse individuals in Hong Kong. The team distributed educational materials to participants by hand.

During the Cultural Bazaar, insightful conversations abounded, with the team's booth drawing a multiethnic audience eager to engage in dialogue about mental health concerns across various cultural contexts. The team facilitated discussions, addressed individual concerns, and dispensed resources aimed at promoting mental wellness.

The importance of advancing mental health among ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong was a focal point of the team's message. Addressing the unique hurdles that EM communities face, such as cultural stigma and language barriers, is crucial in creating equitable access to mental health services. The team's dedication to enhancing mental health provision for these communities shines through its advocacy and tailored support initiatives.

Additionally, the team is gratified to have interacted with students from the HKUST, sharing their work and insights. This interaction not only enriched the students' understanding of mental health in a multicultural context but also allowed the team to listen to and learn from the experiences of a younger, diverse generation. This exchange underscores the team's ongoing commitment to education and community engagement as cornerstones for improving mental health awareness and support systems.
