First Train-the-Trainer Summer School Completed

2025-09-03

A Week of Learning, Leadership, and Lasting Connections

We are delighted to announce the successful completion of the first Train-the-Trainer Summer School, held from 11–15 August 2025.

This was not just a series of workshops, but an intensive 5-day, full-day programme that guided 40 non-Chinese youth from various schools across Hong Kong through a sequential ladder of learning—from the theoretical foundations of mental health, to practical peer support skills, and finally to the principles of community advocacy and leadership.

Each day combined interactive lectures, experiential learning, and hands-on application. Youth first deepened their understanding of mental health concepts, then progressed to role-plays and peer support exercises, and ultimately advanced to advocacy planning and facilitation practice. This carefully structured journey ensured that participants not only gained knowledge, but also built the confidence and competence to apply what they learned in their daily lives and communities.

A key focus of the Summer School was peer support and representation. Participants explored how non-Chinese youth can be empowered to support one another and take up leadership roles within their schools, families, and wider communities. By the final day, youth had designed and presented their own community advocacy initiatives, showing how their voices can drive meaningful change.

The programme was filled with energy, reflection, and connection. One youth participant shared:

“I finally understand how to support a friend under stress — and how to look after myself. The role-plays showed me what to say and what not to say. Now I feel ready to act.”

Beyond skills, the Summer School fostered friendships, mutual understanding, and a sense of belonging among non-Chinese youth across Hong Kong. For many, it was their first experience of being trained not just as learners, but as leaders and changemakers.

The team is deeply grateful for the commitment, courage, and enthusiasm shown by every participant. This Summer School marks an important milestone for the project, and is just the beginning of a wider journey to build a network of non-Chinese youth ambassadors for mental health and community well-being.
