Research Team Publishes Study on Mental Health Literacy and Help-Seeking Attitudes among Ethnic Minorities

2025-08-01

We are pleased to announce the publication of our research paper titled “‘As I know, there is nothing there for our people’: Unmasking mental health literacy and help-seeking attitudes among ethnic minorities in Hong Kong” in the Journal of Asian Public Policy. This study, conducted by Prof. Naubahar Sharif, Dr. Wenjin Chen, Miss Mengyuan Niu, and Prof. Zhiming Cheng, explores how mental health understanding of ethnic minority older adults, particularly South Asians, is influenced by both ethnic factors and their interaction with health systems in Hong Kong.

This research highlights the critical role of cultural beliefs, systemic barriers, and language differences in shaping ethnic minorities’ mental health literacy and help-seeking behaviours. The research team emphasizes the urgent need for culturally sensitive policies in mental health services provision, improved information accessibility, and enhanced training for healthcare providers to address the unique challenges faced by these communities.
